Markem-Imaje, a leading supplier of end-to-end supply chain solutions and industrial marking and coding systems, has enabled Lunelli Group a major Italian wine brand , to adapti to the latest stringent EU regulations on wine labelling. Markem-Imaje owns longstanding AIPIA member Systech International.
Two brands within the Lunelli Group, Bisol1542 and Jeio represent a heritage which stretches back to 1542. The Bisol1542 labels, tells the story of different nuances of the Prosecco Superiore di Valdobbiadene, influenced by a unique blend of soils, vintages and vineyards. Jeio, on the other hand, stands out for its cuvées, offering a Prosecco Superiore with a young, unmistakable and cosmopolitan character., according to the company
Under Regulation (EU) 2021/2117, which came into force in December 2024, all EU wine producers and suppliers need to provide the most accurate and up-to-date ingredient and nutritional information at retail level, a difficulty given the propensity of wine’s ever-changing composition, says Lunelli.
Although this represents a challenge for wine producers, the proprietary Markem-Imaje Smartdate X65® thermal transfer overprinting (TTO) hardware and CoLOS® software, has enabled the Group to achieve compliance. Additionally, ingredient and nutritional data are managed automatically with no need for manual labelling or verification, it claims.
Compliance with the ‘EU Wine Regulation’ requires capturing up-to-date ingredient and nutritional data for each batch of wine and the provision of scannable QR codes for data access. By using the Markem-Imaje hardware and software which facilitates printing QR codes on either paper or plastic labels onto bottles on the production line, QR codes can be generated at line speeds.
The CoLOS® software integrates fully with Lunelli Group’s ERP, so the data can be accessed via its dedicated QR code on the bottle label and is automatically uploaded to the production line to be printed there. The software also enables the frequent need for variations imposed by the different label designs, adapting to the specific needs of each brand.
Another benefit, say the companies, is the ease of changing the printing colour using the Smartdate X65® TTO, so each label can be easily customized. When used in association with the Markem-Imaje software and an ERP, real-time production monitoring is conducted, reducing waste and energy consumption, which improves operational efficiency and environmental impact, it says.
“Through the innovative Markem-Imaje system, we were able to use all the inventory of labels already in stock, without having to dispose of them and avoiding additional costs for the company, as well as respecting the value of sustainability, which is fundamental to all our brands,” says Leonida Fedrigo, production and maintenance manager at Lunelli Group.
