How does NFC-RFID technology enhance patient safety and optimize medication management? | 01-11-2024 |
Tracking, inventory management, compliance and now avoidance of opiod abuse are all critical areas of attention in the pharmaceutical sector. The long delayed US DSCSA regulations are also due to take full effect for manufacturer-level trading partners from November 2024.
RFID and NFC technology is recognised as able to play a key role in just about every aspect of these issues and pharmaceutical packaging specialists already have an array of products to address them – from smart blister packs, through medicine bottle level detectors to lockable pill containers which have both a code and a timer for permitted access, as well as allowing remote access for carers.
However there is still much work to do. Two major technology providers, Benjamin Read, Market Development Manager RFID Europe, Pharma & Healthcare at Avery Dennison and Frederic Vicentini Senior Manager Business Development RFID EMEA for NXP Semiconductors are at the sharp end of many developments, for example developing tags and inlays small enough to fit on small devices such as syringes.
Their collaborative work, as well as that of other Smart Packaging providers is pushing the boundaries of medication management and helping to work towards more effective drug use, less waste and even personalized treatment regimes.
